Once a business decides to invest in Business Intelligence, the next question is usually: should we hire an in-house developer, bring in a freelancer, or work with a specialist consultancy? Each option has real trade-offs.

Hiring an in-house BI developer

Pros: Full-time focus on your business, deep familiarity with your data over time, always available.

Cons: Skilled BI developers are in high demand in South Africa and command competitive salaries. A single hire also means a single point of knowledge — if they leave, your dashboards and data model knowledge often leave with them. For most SMEs, there isn't enough ongoing BI work to justify a full-time role initially.

Hiring a freelance BI developer

Pros: Lower cost than a full-time hire, flexible engagement.

Cons: Quality and reliability vary significantly. Freelancers often work solo without peer review of their data models, and availability for ongoing support can be inconsistent. Data warehousing, SQL development and dashboard design are different (if related) skill sets — few freelancers are strong across all three.

Working with a BI consultancy

Pros: Access to a team with combined data warehousing, SQL, and dashboard development expertise rather than relying on one person's skill set. Consultancies typically have established, repeatable delivery processes and can scale support up or down as your needs change. Business continuity isn't tied to one individual.

Cons: Typically a higher day rate than a single freelancer, though usually lower total cost than an equivalent in-house hire once salary, benefits and management overhead are included.

A practical way to decide

  • Occasional, well-defined reporting needs → Freelancer may suffice for simple dashboards.
  • Ongoing, business-critical BI needs across sales, finance and operations → A consultancy typically delivers better reliability and lower total risk.
  • Very large, dedicated BI workload (multiple full-time developers' worth of work) → In-house team, often supported initially by a consultancy to set up the foundation.

What to look for either way

Regardless of which route you choose, insist on seeing examples of real dashboards (not just screenshots), ask how data warehousing and data quality are handled (not just the visual layer), and clarify what ongoing support looks like after the first delivery.
